Government praised for reviewing Taungya Reforestation system

  
     
  Taungya (B/A), June 9, GNA- Nana Joseph Ackesson, Chief of Atabourso in the Techiman Municipality
has commended the government for reviewing the Taungya Reforestation System.
He said the decision by the government to offer 40 percent of the System to farmers and 40 percent to the Forestry Commission
"is a demonstration of its commitment to the well-being of farmers".
Nana Ackesson, who is the Chairman of African Reforestation Union,
which operates in Asubima forest under the Taungya system,
made the commendation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Taungya.

He said the Union, with more than 20 farming groups and about 2,500 members located at
Offinso, Techiman and Nkoranza districts, was gratified with the government for its prompt response
to the request to modify proceeds under the System.

Nana Ackesson said the new system, which would also provide 10 percent to landowners
would encourage more farmers to engage in afforestation.
He advised members to take advantage of the rains and plant
more tree seedlings to enhance the reforestation programme.

NGO restoring degraded Asubima Forest Reserve

27 Oct. 05 - Afrika Wiederaufforstungsverein e.V (Ed. Correct),
an international non-governmental organisation and its Ghanaian counterpart, Africa Reafforestation Union (AWV)
are restoring 7,863 hectares of totally degraded at Asubima Forest Reserve in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The 13 communities in the project areas have been provided with wells and trained
to start tree nurseries to assist them to replenish the reserve and start sustainable farming practices.
Mr. Michael Yao Tomfeah, Chairman of AWV, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency,
in an interview in Accra, said the organisation was collaborating with the Forestry Department
to encourage the beneficiary communities to adopt the Taungya system -
planting of trees and food crops on the same piece of land.

He said making fuel wood available to the people was the sure means of checking environmental
degradation through the cutting of trees for energy.
AWV has also provided a truck for the transportation of the seedlings and cash crops,
while five dams are to be constructed to facilitate the harvesting of rainwater.
Mr. Tomfeah said the dams would be provided with hunting stands to enable hunters to do selective hunting of animals.
He said the first phase of the project, which started in 2002 and ended 2004,
had been replaced with a second phase, which would last for three years.

AWU he said aimed at assisting the youth to stop shifting cultivation
and rather combine farming activities with agro-forestry.
He said the German Ambassador, Mr. Peter Linder visited the project site, where he asked the
people to refrain from the setting of bushfires to avoid the destruction of the tree seedlings.
Mr. Emmanuel K. Mensah, an official with AWU, said the organisation had projects in the Brong Ahafo,
Volta, Northern, Eastern and Central Regions.

He said a new project would start at Ada in the Greater Accra Region.

Environmentally-Friendly NGOs support fire volunteer group with funds

Awutu-Akrabong (C/R), June 12, GNA - The Central Regional Fire Officer, Mr Kru Agyarko-Attobrah, has appealed to Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and public spirited persons to contribute cash and working gears to support various fire volunteer groups in the region. Some of the materials the volunteers require to encourage them to make enable them to sacrifice towards effective prevention of bushfires and protection of the country's forests included, cutlasses, Wellington boots and torch-lights.

Mr Agyarko-Attobrah was speaking at a ceremony at which, leaders of a Germany-based NGO, Afrika Wiederauffors Tungsverein E.V., and a sister organisation in Ghana, Africa Reforestation Union (ARU) presented four million cedis to the Awutu-Akrabong fire prevention and fire fighting group on Wednesday.

According to the two leaders, Michael Yao Tomfeah, and Mr Emmanuel K.K. Mensah, their action which followed the impressive turn-out and the great enthusiasm displayed by members of the Akrabong fire volunteer group at their recent passing out ceremony, was to motivate members of the group to protest natural forest resources in the area.

Mt Tomfeah and Mr Mensah pledged to assist members of the volunteer group to form branches of the NGOs in the community to assist in afforestation programmes in forest reserves in the area and also help introduce environmental-friendly farming practices.

On his part, the Agona District Coordinating Director, Mr G.B.L. Siilo, expressed government's appreciation to the two sister NGOs for their environmentally-friendly gesture, and advised leaders of the fire volunteer group to ensure meaningful use of the assistance to move the group forward.

Mr Siilo assured them of Agona District Assembly's preparedness to provide them with some of their working tools. Mr Bartholomew K. Nketsiah, Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Fire Officer, charged members of the group to educate people in and around Akrabong on fire prevention aspect of their work than to wait for fire disasters to occurs before exhibiting their skills and knowledge.
